Caught on the wrong side of the battle lines, Shae spent days running for her life, which unfortunately led her headlong into a Circle of Thorns enclave taking advantage of the chaos in the city. Shae, they decided, would make an excellent sacrifice. It almost worked.

But the Thorns screwed up. The summoning backfired and the magical backlash leveled the building. It changed her, binding the power of a daemon to her, imparting incredible power. but the will to use it was all her own. For months she stalked the streets, dealing fiery destruction to everyone who had ever wronged her. In the course of her rampage, though, she crossed paths with another young woman named Elisa Morales. Elisa gave her something better than revenge to fight for: a future.
