Hero Kids RPG is a fantasy RPG for kids aged from 4 to 10, available from DriveThruRPG. I consider it a great warm-up to play D&D with my girls later!
I drew new characters for them today. (Click the thumbnails above for larger versions.) They decided they are sea elves living in the river near the village where the other land-based PCs live. The older sister, Aqua, uses a shark-toothed spear to hunt for fish and is trying to learn magic. Her little sister, Chroma, is an expert at rainbow magic and “rainbow everything.”
Here’s a summary of today’s exciting session.
Fishing Surprise
Today, Rick (a hunter who lives on land) was fishing by the river and caught… Aqua! He was confused and thought maybe she was drowning in the river, so he pulled her out of the water. Just as she was about to explain, her sister Chroma pulled her back into the river using her magic. Rick was worried about Aqua, so he dove in and swam down to them… and under the water, he could see that they have gills!
Aqua explained to Rick about sea elves and they invited him to visit their freshwater coral home. Chroma decided to use her magic to let Rick breathe and talk underwater. They showed him their SeaTV (powered by electric eels) and rocking-chair couch. (We were of course drawing the village as they explained everything, picked bedrooms, and so on. They always love this map phase.)
Piranha… and the Sea Queen
Chroma saw some deadly piranha swimming by outside… right toward the coral building where the village’s food is stored!
They went to the door and fought five piranha, each more deadly and angry than the last. Finally, the piranha were defeated and who should appear but the eeeevil Sea Queen.
(Now, the kids remember from their history classes that the Sea Queen was once the queen of the sea elves, but she was really mean. More than once, she made all the kids in her kingdom go to bed without dinner! So finally the elves had a revolution and banished her, and then they instituted a representational democracy where every elf had a vote.)
The Sea Queen scolded, “How dare you awful children defeat my piranha while they were stealing all your food! Come outside to face me — or I’ll destroy your house!” The two piranha at her side chittered menacingly.
They came outside and fought the Sea Queen! Chroma used her rainbow magic to fight piranha, Rick shot arrows at the Sea Queen, and Aqua used her shark-toothed spear. The Queen sent evil, magically polluted water in counterattack.
But the kids were very brave and strong! Soon the so-called Queen was beating a hasty retreat. “You’ll pay for this!” and then yelled, “Come help me!” just before the kids knocked her out. They tied her up so they could turn her in to the Water Police later.
Sea Monster Mayhem
Then the kids found out who the Queen called for help…. They heard a huge ROAR! It was a sea monster. (Aqua explained to Rick that this sea monster once guarded the Queen’s castle.) They fought the sea monster and won!
Once the sea monster was knocked out, all the pollution magic started leaking out. Aqua realized that this sea monster used to be friendly and protect the kids, which means the Queen used her magic on him to make him mean. But, now he’ll be all better.
Epilogue
Their parents came home and told them they did a great job being so brave. They explained that once upon a time, the Sea Queen heard a prophecy that said her people would reject her and she would eventually be defeated by kids… and that’s why the Queen made a bad choice and decided to start being mean to everybody, which is what eventually caused her people to reject her, and eventually she was defeated by these three kids.
They all had delicious roast piranha for dinner, and Aqua used the piranha teeth to make new spears. The friendly sea monster is now their pet and helps guard their village.
